Community Activists Block Home Demolitions in Delta
Delta - Concerned citizens from Delta and Surrey blocked demolition of homes that stand in the way of the South Fraser Perimeter Road (SFPR) project yesterday. Estimated to cost over $1 billion, the SFPR is a new four lane truck highway planned to pave over 75 homes in Delta alone.
One of the activists scaled an excavator and hung a banner saying "No Gateway to Global Warming - Don't Pave Us", while others carried signs saying "We Don't Want Your Truckin' Freeways!" and "There Are No Jobs on a Dead Planet".
Police at the scene said anyone climbing the demolition equipment was facing arrest, but no arrests were made. Word came late morning that demolitions had been cancelled for the day.
"We showed today that it might not take much to bring this destructive, climate changing project to a grinding halt," said Surrey resident Tom Jaugelis. "The community seems energized by this action and excited about what we can achieve."
Transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in BC, and a report by the Livable Region Coalition found that the Gateway project would increase provincial emissions by 30%. The SFPR alone is planned to pave over several major First Nations sites, through the sensitive edges of Burns Bog, and fertile farmland in Delta.
"Gateway is far from a done deal," said Delta resident Inger Kam, a founder of the Farmland Defence League of BC. "No final build contracts have been signed for the SFPR, and much may yet be done to stop this wasteful project before it even comes close to being finished."

1 comment postedIts really great to know that there are people exerting effort in order to bring change. Nowadays, we are faced with a lot of struggles that tend to stop at a moment but then resume after laying low and are not noticed by the public anymore. People should be vigilant because those people who we thing have stoped taking advantage of us resume writing paper work that continue their operations away from the public eye which is even more danegrous.
